Who We Are
At any given time, the Humane Society of Portage County is responsible for the health and well-being of over 200 companion animals. Through the financial support of our donors, we provide these animals with food, comfort and veterinary care. Our education and outreach programs reach young people in our community with information regarding bite prevention, pet care and the humane, compassionate treatment of animals. We offer volunteer (you must be 18 yrs. old) opportunities to community members including dog and cat socialization, housekeeping, educational programming and fundraising.
In 2021 The Humane Society of Portage County received the Community Charitable Award from the Portage County Business Council; recognizing fifty years of keeping the shelter animals and community engulfed in safe animal practices.
What We Do
Our mission is to prevent cruelty, abuse, neglect, and overpopulation of companion animals while seeking adoption of these animals into compatible homes. We teach humane awareness and respect for all life, thus helping to build a better community.
HSPC houses a medical unit, adoption services and Animal Control for Portage County all under one roof. In 2021 over one thousand animals were brought to the shelter. They are treated for health issues, housed, fed, enrichment provided, and adopted out. This shelter has a 98.5% live release rate (a 12 month intake of one thousand animals-- almost a thousand were adopted out to their forever homes). At this writing canine live release rates are 99.2%.
