Who We Are

Mission Statement

When Schmeeckle Reserve was created in 1977, the committee established three priorities to guide the management and development of the property:

Refuge: Preserve and restore native ecological communities of central Wisconsin.

Research and Education: Serve as a living laboratory for teaching and research.

Recreation: Serve the recreational needs of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point campus and the community, when those uses are not in conflict with the first two priorities.

What We Do

Schmeeckle Reserve is a 285-acre natural area on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. The Reserve is managed to protect and restore native ecological communities of central Wisconsin. The land is a mosaic of oak and pine forests, prairie, oak savanna, sedge meadows, cattail marshes, and streams. Schmeeckle Reserve is open to the public and serves as a unique gathering place for the community and university. The Reserve is a College of Natural Resources field station, providing rich learning and research opportunities for faculty and students.
